Governing the Internet


Internet operates without a central government body. However, to maintain interoperability, all technical and policy aspects of the underlying core infrastructure and the main namespace is managed by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), which is headquartered in Marina del Rey, California, the United States. ICANN is an institution that has the authority and duty to identify unique for use on the internet, including domain names, Internet Protocol (IP), the port number of applications in transport protocols, and many other parameters. ICANN was established on 18 September 1998 and the formal legal status on 30 September 1998. ICANN is governed by an international board of directors of the internet, business, academic, and non-commercial use.
